31st Annual Lippitt Country Show

The scenic Tunbridge Fairgrounds nestled in the heart of Vermont were once again home to the Lippitt Country Show. The Lippitt Club and its’ annual event are based on the belief that the qualities for which the Morgan breed was recognized in its’ infancy, are still valid today. It is believed that the Morgan “look”, type, temperament, way of going, and versatility still make it a horse to be admired and preserved. All of these attributes were present during the Shows’ 80 plus classes.

Many thanks go to the members of the Show Committee and all of the weekend’s volunteers, steered by managers Judy Johnson and Judy Mosman. History was preserved by photographers Denlore, Inc. and Carole MacDonald. Marilyn Childs acted as announcer and shared historical notes with entrants and audience alike. Kudos to all those that sponsored Classes or Trophies, and last but not least, what an honor to have the likes of Jeanne Mellin Herrick judging the classes in the main ring!

The show drew entries from Vermont, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Maine, New York and West Virginia. Although Mother Nature shed many a raindrop upon the grounds Saturday, the judges, show committee, entrants and hardy audience trudged on. Sunday proved to be the better of the 2 days, but the ever popular Trotting Races had to be cancelled due to the muddy condition of the track.

The show started with a nice round of ½ Lippitt entries, Fitting & Showmanship and full Lippitt youngsters. The in hand mare classes brought many beautiful Morgan specimens into the ring. Jr. Champion Lippitt Mare honors were given to Michabou K.T. Marilyn, a lovely filly owned by Lori St. Hilaire Cash with Reserve going to Brook Hill Ember Ash, owned by Heather Pinet. The Grand Champion Mare honors were bestowed to Special Occasion (owned by Heather Pinet) for the 2nd year in a row, with Reserve honors to Royalton Loantha, owned by Stephanie Davis.

The stallion classes gave tribute to the true Justin Morgan type with winners like Mint Blackjack (owned by Karen Swanberg-White), who took home the Green Mountain Standard Class win, the Western Pleasure Championship and Lippitt of the Year honors! Randallane Genesis (owned by Crescent Peirce) and Michabou Traditional Lad (owned by Lori St Hilaire Cash) also made their presence’ known. Grand Champion Stallion honors went all the way home to West Virginia with Covenant Nathan Ash and his owner Clara Hendin. It was only fitting that Nathan’s grandson Mint Blackjack would finish with the Reserve ribbon.

The gelding classes showed handsome winners Randallane Aftershock, owned by Anne Dow and Mic Mac Enchantor, owned by Paula Beck.

The “Over 20” group was very well represented this year by Wmont First Lady (age 27), Ashworth Nick Moro (age 26), Wachuset Imperial (age 25), Wachuset Mt Bell(age 24), Megamint (age 24), Covenant Nathan Ash (age 23), Rohan Ithilien (age 21), and Royalton Loantha (age 21). The Allen’s Major Award was granted to senior member Mega Mint, owned by Sandra Mercurio.

A large group of youth filled the Junior classes, Leadline and Costume with lovely horses and broad smiles; paying tribute to the honest and kind hearts of the Lippitt Morgan. The Junior Exhibitor High Point Championship Award was earned by Nicole Moyer with Reserve honors tied between Taylor Cranston and Alyssa Warawka. Alyssa also won the Renee St. Maurice Horsemanship Award. The Beginner Walk/Trot High Point Championship ages 13 and Under went to Mariah Cranston with Alexandra Jeffway taking Reserve. The Award for the ages 14-18 went to Colleen Scott.

Classes under saddle were filled with good competition. Imperial Joy and Angela Savoie showed their versatility by winning the Trail Class, Road Hack and taking ribbons in Western Pleasure, Saddleseat and Dressage. Madrona Ethan Ash (with owner Anne Hablitzel and trainer Liz Gesler) made their presence known in Hunter Hack, Carriage Driving Pleasure & Obstacles, Versatility, Open Jumping, and the Pairs Class with long-time competitor Wachuset Imperial; “Buddy” (as he is fondly referred to) would not be denied! Anne took home numerous ribbons and trophies while Liz and Buddy were bestowed with the Ryegate Mortikai Partnership Award. Royalton Tremaine, a ½ Lippitt stallion owned by Leo Joost also showed his versatility by competing in many classes and winning the ½ Lippitt Open Pleasure Championship.

Other standouts in the performance classes include Imperial Quest, winner of the Road Hack Championship, Imperial Major, winner of the Junior Exhibitor Pleasure Championship, Old Vermont Traveller, winner of the Hunt Seat Championship, and Rohan Varda, the Saddleseat Championship winner.

A new favorite in the class line-up was the Trail Class for horses age 2 and under. These young entries were asked to navigate through cones, over plywood bridges, past tarps and plastic bags. A few decided it was better to jump than walk and that tarps can bite; giving the audience a bit of entertainment. Randallane Shock & Awe took the blue with Brook Hill Ember Ash earning 2nd.

Amidst all the excitement, Lester Welch of Ryegate Farm was surprised by the unexpected announcement that he was this years’ well deserving recipient of the Nancy Plimpton Award for his ongoing contributions and efforts to perpetuate and promote the Lippitt Morgan. Saturday night bode well for another festive dinner and benefit auction. It’s a good indication that folks are really involved when husbands and wives start bidding against one another!

Camaraderie, good sportsmanship and an atmosphere of fun and friendship made the 31st Lippitt Country Show a true success. If you weren’t able to join us this year, please consider making the trip through the beautiful hills of Vermont on the 3rd weekend in August, 2006. You’re sure to discover a beautiful group of Lippitt Morgans, and come away with a rich sense of history that draws you back for many years to come.

Lippitt Reports from the 2005 Show Season

The Lippitt Country Show 2005, Tunbridge Fairgrounds, VT
August 20-21, 2005
report submitted by Heather Pinet, Brook Hill Classic Morgans
Special Occasion and Brook Hill Ember Ash Although the equine turnout was small, I thought the competition was good and everyone was cordial. Despite the rain, I personally had a wonderful time and met a lot of new fellow Lippitt enthusiasts ~ thanks to referrals from fellow breeders, folks that had seen our website (thanks Brenda V. :) and those that followed us back to the barn. Seeing friends that we've made at past shows was great, too. Jeanne Mellin Herrick was such fun to show under ~ very enthusiastic about all the horses, and personable with the exhibitors.

We had a great time with the old gals Wachuset Mt Bell and Rohan Ithilien who came with their owners, Mary & Jackie Guiseley. It was their 1st time at LCS, and they really enjoyed it. Brittany rode Bell in leadline, and still hasn't let go of her trophy! I had the pleasure of driving Tilly in a carriage class (with 5 minutes practice beforehand); what a blast! She did everything perfectly until the line up. Heaven forbid she might have to stand still. I haven't shown her in harness in about 5 years! I was looking forward to doing the trotting race with her, but the rain made it too slippery to chance anyone (or any equine) getting hurt.

Lester Welch was presented with the Nancy Plimpton Award on Saturday, much to his surprise. It was an honor to drag him into the ring to see Nancy and hear Marilyn Childs read about his lifelong contributions to the horse. There are many, many others that are more than deserving of this recognition ~ so we all ought to start writing up those nominations now! :)
Nancy Plimpton, Lester Welch, Heather Pinet

Another highlight was seeing Covenant Nathan Ash in the flesh ~ he looked wonderful! I'm anxious to see the photos of him with his grandson Mint Blackjack that Denlore and Carol MacDonald took; ought to be striking.

The Lippitt Country Show 2005, Tunbridge Fairgrounds, VT
August 20-21, 2005
report submitted by Judy Mosman

The Lippitt Country Show starts on Friday evening with a pot luck, a tradition started back in Woodstock at the GMHA grounds, by Grace Yaglou. Not sure of the year. As usual, if you were late, too bad , the food was gone!!! Our pot luck coordinator, Charlotte, was in a bad car accident the previous week so was unable to come this year. In true Lippitt fashion, others joined in and got the pot luck going , cleaned up and everyone fed. Our best wishes for a speedy recovery, Charlotte. Some other highlights that come to mind are, the youth and their enjoyment of the barrel races and pole bending. The egg toss, got a bit wild but all had fun. Who can forget the pairs class, three entries this year, winners were Kelly Mastine on Wachuset Imperial and Liz Gessler on Madrona Ethan Ash, aka, Buddy. These two gals put this pair together at the last minute and did they look good, red coats and all, Traveled in sync and almost did not know there was a second horse there! And of course, the victory pass with the blue ribbons on crossed crops and big grins on both faces!!! the award to the person from farthest away, Young lady from Germany, who also rode in various classes. The big grins and wide eyes when a trophy plus blue ribbons were awarded to each leadline entry. The trotting races had to be cancelled due to the rain on Sat. The track just did not dry out in time.

In between keeping track of ribbons and trophies this weekend, I got a chance to watch a new class at the Lippitt Country Show,~trail class for horses two and under. We have never had this class to my recollection before but I understand other parts of the country do this on a regular basis. It was a hoot to watch these babies approach the obstacles!!! You could tell the ones who had been practicing!!!! (Heather!) One young one actually seemed to pounce on the plywood as if to kill it!!! As mentioned already, numbers were down, I think closer to 58 in all, but everyone seemed to have fun, the comments from the judge were a thrill to hear, quality, beautiful, nice, I love that horse... Jeanne is from the show Morgan world but sure appreciates the Lippitts and their beauty. She gave some brief art lessons between classes a couple times!!! When you have a gelding who had never been away from home before, ridden by a junior who had been on him for only four days before the show, and still brought home his share of blues, that kind of sums up the Lippitt and their potential. Neither rain, nor snow nor wind can stop a Lippitt.

report submitted by Heather Pinet, Brook Hill Classic Morgans

We're just getting back from the Maine Morgan Show.........our first trip to this event. We brought 3 horses ~ Special Occasion, Brook Hill Special Edition and Brook Hill Ember Ash. We put up our farm sign and photos, laid out the LC brochures and info, etc. and did our best to show folks what Lippitts are all about.

Karen Swanberg-White was there with Mint Blackjack and several other nice Morgans that she helps to train. Angela Savoie was also there with her nice mare Imperial Joy. Don Tobey also came by to visit. There may have been other Lippitts there; I never got a chance to go through all the barns and that I regret..........

Imperial Joy & Angela Savoie
sidenote: Imperial Joy and Angela Savoie have qualified in the youth competition to go the Morgan Grand Nationals in Oklahoma
Angie and Joy did a nice job; they're fun to watch and are such a good team! Angie helped us get Special Edition ready for our 1st ever Sport Horse event; we didn't pin, but I was pleased with Edie's score and I learned a lot.

Brook Hill Ember Ash
and Karen Swanberg-White
Karen and I showed Ember Ash (aka Ashley) in the very exciting, heart pounding Weanling Futurity ~ a far cry from the relaxed atmosphere at LCS!!!!!!!!! Ashley got A LOT of attention and came home Reserve Champion and yes, we're all very proud! Couldn't have done it without Karen and Angela (who risked life and limb by staying back in the barn trying to keep mama (Special Occasion) from tearing down the place while her filly was in the limelight.)

Blackjack won the LC sponsored Justin Morgan Standard Class and we came right back into the ring to win 1st in Mare & Foal with Special Occasion and Ashley. Folks were following us back to the barn, and some took Lippitt info home with them. :)

We had a lot of fun with all our Lippitt and Morgan friends ~ the camaraderie was super! Jory and Britt both made new friends and we all learned A LOT.

Brook Hill Special Edition
Just wanted to say thanks publicly to everyone who helped us, and let our Lippitt friends know that we're doing our best to keep the Lippitts in the positive limelight in Maine. We look forward to going back again next year ~ we're not like the high steppers that were surrounding us, but we held our own. :)
